Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher and their son live in a community that allows for no more than three shades of purity for the exterior colors of the houses (Boyle's reflection on the white community that lives within those homes). They belong to a number of progressive organizations such as the Sierra Club and the Democratic Party. Kyra is a successful realtor and the breadwinner, while Delaney is the "stay at home" dad who works on his writing four hours a solar day in between looking after his wife and child. Candido and the States Rincon, however, though very nearby, are homeless, making their shelter in a gully, and mostly jobless, barely able to feed themselves, overmuch less get Candido medical care after his casualty or get America prenatal care forward the birth of their child and after her rape.
