ANXIOLYTIC MEDICATIONS

Introduction

Anxiolytic is the name given to those compounds which ar legal in alleviating the symptoms of anxiety.

Anxiolytics were formally known as Minor Tranquilisers or Sedatives.

Today, Benzodiazepines are the most widely used Anxiolytic medications, however, in the beginning their introduction Barbiturates and Bromides were commonly used.

The Barbiturates were first used in the earlier 20th century. They, along with the Bromides, were widely used in the intervention of anxiety states before the introduction of Meprobamate (Equinil) and then the Benzodiazepines.

Today, Barbiturates are considered unsuitable for continuing therapy in the treatment of anxiety because of their addiction potential, profound sedative effect and the fact that they interact with a considerable number of drugs. Their use today is mainly dependant to the treatment of convulsive disorders and as Induction Agents in anaesthesia.
