The example he used was that a person could easily kill themselves speedy with heroin than aspirin; however, people can kill themselves easier by jumping off a high building than a low building. He also states that accidental overdose is caused because drugs are illegal and people are not exactly trusted of what they are buying. Governmental safeguards could be put in send to prevent accidental overdoses if drugs were legalized.
The author stated addiction could be anything such as shopping or eating and is not limited to only narcotics. He goes on to say that opium is little toxic than alcohol so alcoholics can be just as productive as an opium addict can. He gives a couple examples of women that lived long, productive lives who took morphine daily. The idea that a striking amount of the population would ignore their responsibilities and use drugs all day is absurd according to the author. Self-medication is each individuals counterbalance and is no different from buying a gun or consuming alcohol.
The author says that there should be laws in gift just like alcohol in the fact that minors cannot purchase drugs and driving under the influence is an offense. Minors would train more access to availability of drugs but right directly minors are able to get drugs anyway. Szasz states that alcohol is easy in every home but drugs are ordinarily found in school more than alcohol.
